California Dreaming: 3 Magical Days in Fallbrook

·6 min read·California, Wine Country, San Diego

Wine country, ocean breezes, and a château that feels like you stole it from the French countryside

There's a version of Southern California that has nothing to do with freeways, theme parks, or influencer hot spots. It unfolds in the valleys east of Oceanside — rolling hills covered in avocado groves and citrus orchards, small towns with a sense of themselves, and vineyards that are genuinely excellent and perpetually under-discovered.

Fallbrook sits at the center of this. Known as the "Avocado Capital of the World" (the groves really do go on forever), it's also 20 minutes from Temecula's wine country, 30 minutes from the coast, and the kind of place that rewards the people who find it.

The Luxury Modern Chateau — a French-inspired estate on four private acres — is the right way to do it. We came for a long weekend. Here's what three days looks like.

Day 1: Arrive Like You Own the Place

The estate sits on four acres with mountain, valley, and vineyard views. Walking the grounds on arrival, the phrase that kept coming up was: this doesn't feel real. The half-Olympic saltwater lap pool is heated year-round. The spa is enormous. The chef's kitchen has everything you'd want — and the property sleeps up to 15, so if you're here with a group, the space absorbs everyone without feeling crowded.

Day 1 is for unpacking slowly. Swim some laps. Open a bottle of local Temecula red on the terrace. Watch the hills go gold in the late afternoon light. Make dinner in the chef's kitchen — the farmers market in Fallbrook runs on Thursdays and the produce is absurdly good.

What to buy at the Fallbrook Farmers Market

Avocados (obviously), Haas and Reed. Local honey. Fresh-cut flowers. And the tamales — don't miss the tamales.

Day 2: Temecula Wine Country

Temecula is 20 minutes east, and it punches well above its fame. The wine has improved dramatically over the last decade — warm days and cool nights create the right conditions for Rhône varieties especially, and a handful of estates are making wines worth serious attention.

  • Leoness Cellars — elevated tasting room, stunning views, excellent Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah.
  • South Coast Winery — large, lively, with a resort attached. Good for groups who want the full experience.
  • Danza del Sol — more intimate, great Rhône blends, one of the better values on the valley.
  • Callaway Vineyard — historic estate at the top of the valley, sweeping panoramas, solid Chardonnay.

Three tastings is plenty for a day. Have lunch at Meritage at Callaway or grab food truck fare in Old Town Temecula — there's always something good parked near the Promenade on weekends. End the afternoon browsing Old Town's antique shops, then drive the scenic De Portola Wine Trail back toward Fallbrook with the windows down.

Day 3: The Coast

Oceanside is 30 minutes west, and it's having a moment. The beach town that spent decades in the shadow of nearby Carlsbad and Encinitas has emerged as one of the most interesting small coastal cities in Southern California.

Start on the pier — one of the longest wooden piers on the West Coast — and walk it all the way out. Breakfast at 333 Pacific, which sits right on the sand and does a proper eggs Benedict. Rent a bike from Beach Break Surf & Skate and ride the boardwalk north toward Oceanside Harbor.

The harbor is worth an hour: working fishing boats, fresh fish and chips at Rockin' Baja, and the best lobster taco in the county. Swim at the harbor beach if the surf is gentle — it usually is. Drive back through Bonsall and Fallbrook on the back roads, windows down, maybe with a box of avocados from a roadside stand.

There's a version of Southern California that has nothing to do with freeways. Fallbrook is that version.

If You Have More Time

  • La Jolla Cove — 45 minutes south. Sea lion colony, tide pools, kayaking, and one of the most beautiful natural settings in California.
  • Legoland Carlsbad — 25 minutes if you're traveling with kids. Better than you'd expect.
  • Mission San Luis Rey — 15 minutes west. The largest of the California missions, beautifully preserved, worth an hour.
  • Palomar Mountain — 45 minutes east. Observatory, hiking, and sweeping views on clear days.

The Chateau for Celebrations

One thing worth noting: the estate accommodates up to 60 daytime guests, and it's designed for events. If you're planning a milestone — a milestone birthday, an intimate wedding, a family reunion, a corporate retreat — this property handles it in a way that transforms an event into an experience. The grounds, the pool, the chef's kitchen, the views: everything does the work for you.
